The western part of Gavkhuni Wetland is covered with sandy hills. The wetland extends to a mountain in the north, while its south and east parts are flat and desert-like areas. This diverse environment has led to a notable variety of reptiles in the Gavkhuni Wetland region.
In 2018, Mohammad Kaboli, collaborating with Kamran Kamali and Atefeh Asadi, conducted a project titled “Identification of Reptile Fauna in the Gavkhuni Wetland Area of Isfahan Province.” Their aim was to identify the wetland’s reptiles, leading to the identification of 14 reptile species; including 5 snake species and 9 lizard species.
